Frady
Stage Director
Critically acclaimed soprano and stage director Kathryn Frady has worked throughout the
United States and Europe. Frady has been widely praised for her vocal range, dramatic talent,
and immersive and creative stage direction. Frady received Most Memorable Opera
Performance Awards for her portrayals of the title roles in Tosca, Suor Angelica, Susannah,
Violetta in La Traviata, Julia in The Copper Queen, Amelia in the World Premiere of Amelia Lost,
and for her direction of the World Premiere of The Doctor and the Devils by Jason Overall. A
fierce advocate for new American works, Frady has produced, sung, and directed in over 20
premieres.
Arts Knoxville described Frady’s recent Pagliacci production, “As evidence of the
professionalism and abilities of Frady and the five-singer cast, the two performances in vastly
different environments had different personalities but each exploded with marvelously devised
characters and truly impressive vocal performances.” Broadway World described Frady’s
production of the double-bill of Josephine by Tom Cipullo and Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci with
Union Avenue Opera as “sexy as hell….She gives a natural visual variety to the former, and in
the latter, she handles the chorus beautifully, making them a group of realistic individuals. The
clever heightened-reality style in the play-within-the-play is charming indeed. And the violence
is convincingly staged.”
Other recent highlights include stage director for Tragedy of Carmen at Tulsa Opera, stage
director for Hansel and Gretel at Mobile Opera, Mother and stage director in Hansel and Gretel
at Wichita Grand Opera, Elle in Poulenc’s La Voix Humaine at Marble City Opera and Druid City
Opera, and Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd at Opera Idaho.
Frady has a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of
North Texas, is the Founding Executive Artistic Director of Marble City Opera in Knoxville, TN
and Interim General Director of Opera in the Heights in Houston, TX.
